Module 1: Drawing

Drawing is the foundation of all visual arts, and it's where our exciting 14-week journey begins. In this module, you’ll discover the power of pencil and learn to see the world through an artist’s eyes. Whether you’ve never drawn before or you are looking to refine your skills, this module will equip you with the fundamental techniques needed to create captivating artwork.

What you'll learn in weeks 1-3

Getting to know your tools

  • Different grades of graphite pencils

  • Useful tools like erasers and blending stumps

  • How pencil choice affects your artwork

Master essential drawing techniques

  • Mark-making techniques like hatching, cross-hatching, and stripling, and use them to create different textures

  • Shading skills to create depth and form

Understanding tonal values

  • Learn to see and recreate light and shadow

  • Create contrast to bring your drawings to life

Composition, Proportion and Perspective

  • Use grids to accurately enlarge images

  • Explore techniques for balanced composition and the basics of linear perspective

Portraiture and figure drawing

  • Learn techniques for capturing likenesses

  • Practice basic human proportions and poses

Still life drawing

  • Hone your observation skills and recreate everyday objects

  • Understand how light interacts with different materials

At the end of these first 3 weeks, you’ll have a solid foundation in artistic techniques that will serve you throughout the course and beyond. You’ll be applying some of these newfound skills along with a splash of colour, as we move into our next exciting module: Oil Pastels!
